Probably the biggest question facing pet owners considering veterinary pet insurance isn’t how much it will cost or what plan to purchase but whether or not pet health insurance is even worth it in the first place. Assuming knowledge is power, we’ve decided to take a bold new approach here at the Veterinary Pet Insurance guide and embark on a challenging project.

Beginning today with the Labrador Retriever, we will start posting health issues by dog breed. This is a Herculean endeavor and will doubtless be time consuming but we’re not prepared to end things there. Mixed in with dog breed health issues, we will eventually begin to cover cats and exotic pets as well.

We anticipate this won’t be an overnight task. If you don’t find your particular breed of dog or type of pet listed, please come back as we’ll try to get to it as soon as we can. So you know what to expect, we’ll be running down the AKC Dog Registration Statistics which lists dog breeds by popularity. Perusing this list should give you an idea of when you can expect to see your breed listed.

Also, please note that this mission does not intend to provide every bit of information available on your breed or pet. That’s been done elsewhere so there’s not point reinventing the wheel here. Our posts will focus specifically on common health issues by breed or animal and will link to additional posts on this blog discussing the particular ailments in detail. For example, if you look up Labrador health issues (either by perusing the categories or entering the term in our search engine), you’ll go to a page listing a bit about Labradors and specific health concerns in the breed. Each of the itemized health concerns will be a link taking you to a page detailing the ailment or disease, signs and symptoms, important actions you can take, treatment options and, finally, an explanation of how veterinary pet insurance can help offset costs. If you want to know more general information about particular breeds, my wife has a fun dog website devoted to our beloved Beagle, Bunny. One section of her site provides dog breed information. You’ll find it on the left side of the home page under the archive section.

We hope the information we will be providing helps you make informed decisions on the value of veterinary pet insurance for your particular pet. As always, if you have questions, please don’t hesitate to post a comment and I will do my best to answer your questions.
