VPI Pet Insurance Company Covers Exotic Pets
While we may all have overcome the novelty of veterinary pet insurance, there are still many who don’t know just how comprehensive this industry has become. Not only can we get health insurance for our common pets (cats and dogs) but did you know you can also get pet health insurance for your scaly and feathered friends? You bet you can!
VPI Pet Insurance Company, based in Brea, California, offers one of the more comprehensive and approachable veterinary pet insurance programs in the US. Their website is infinitely approachable and services are explained in a digestible language most of us can wrap our minds around. What impressed me the most about their services are their Avian and Exotic pet plans.
VPI’s Avian and Exotic Pet Plan policy pays up to 90% of the benefit schedule allowance or up to 90% of the veterinary bill and covers a maximum payment of $2000 per incident or illness and a maximum of $7000 for each policy term. To help clear those terms up a bit, VPI advises that “The benefit allowance amount replenishes with each new incident or with each new annual policy renewal, depending on the policy type selected. An incident is a new condition that causes you to consult a veterinarian. Chronic or ongoing conditions, such as allergic dermatitis, are considered to be one incident no matter how many times a veterinarian is consulted.”
Also noteworthy is just how many types of animals are covered under this plan. When I thought of exotic pets, I considered such things as miniature pigs and a reptile or two, but VPI’s veterinary pet insurance for exotic animals covers a noteworthy list. As of this writing, they cover.
| Amphibians | Hamsters | Rats |
| Chameleons | Hedgehogs | Rabbits |
| Chinchillas | Iquanas | Snakes |
| Geckos | Lizards | Extra Large Snakes |
| Gerbils | Mice | Sugar Gliders |
| Goats | Opossums | Tortoises |
| Guinea Pigs | Potbellied Pigs | Turtles |
Though not listed on their website, I did contact VPI to verify that, yes, they also cover those lovable and mischievous fur-balls, Ferrets. The only downside to the exotic pet plan policy is that, unlike the Avian plan VPI offers, the Exotic plan does not offer a Supplemental & Routine Care Coverage rider. This Rider, which is available under the Avian plan, enhances the basic plan to help pay for such things as routine exams, blood testing, fecal analysis, nail and wing trim and more.
I wanted to set out VPI as a leader in the veterinary pet insurance industry early on. As America’s oldest and largest (the voice on their call-hold advised they even insured TV’s Lassie!), VPI has the experience to know what works. Their easy to follow website and very friendly staff (everybody I’ve spoken with sounded like they were having a great day and it was contagious) help them stand out as a leading contender if you are considering purchasing veterinary pet insurance for your beloved pets.
